Learn the key steps after landing your new role – and how to thrive with Keyba Careers
Landing a new job is a huge achievement – congratulations! But what happens next? Whether you’re a student stepping into your first role, a job seeker making a career move, or a career educator guiding others, understanding what to expect after receiving a job offer can make all the difference. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the essential steps and documents you’ll encounter, so you can start your new role with confidence and clarity.
Job Offer Process
A successful candidate may be offered the position via phone or be asked to come in for a face-to-face conversation to explain why they are offering the role and provide the details of the package.
Whichever way you have received the job offer, ensure you thank them for the opportunity and show your excitement about being offered the role.
However, nothing is official until you have something in writing.
You should receive:
- An email or letter of offer confirming the start date and time.
- An employment contract with all the terms and conditions, and
- A position description that outlines your role and responsibilities, including your Key Performance Indicators (*KPIs).
*Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are measurable goals or objectives that the business would like to achieve. It is a target for individuals and teams to aim for to help businesses move forward.
Start Date/Induction
Along with your acceptance, it is really important to clarify when your start date will be and the expected time for you to arrive. You should ask about your induction, what it entails and how long they believe it will take for you to be trained.
On your first day, you should be provided with documents to complete and sign. However, it is becoming more common for these documents to be sent to you digitally.
These include:
- Employment Contract. Fully read and understand what you are about to accept because an employment contract is a binding document
- Position Description
- Staff Information Form to gather information from you, such as your bank details (so they can pay you), superannuation, emergency contacts, uniform size (if they are providing uniforms), etc.
- Tax File Declaration Form
- Superannuation Standard Choice Form
- Workstation Checklist Form
- Fair Work Information Statement (FWIS) and Acknowledgement Form
- Casual Employee Information Statement (CEIS) and Acknowledgement Form (for casual employees)
- Employment Policy and Procedure Manual and Acknowledgement Form
You may need to provide:
- A copy of identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport) to conduct a working rights check
- Valid Driver’s Licence if you are required to drive a company vehicle
Starting a new job is more than just signing a contract – it’s the beginning of an exciting new chapter. By knowing what to expect and preparing ahead, you’ll set yourself up for success from day one.
